Quotes

For those who might enjoy seeing these, I am posting the quotes I have collected over the years on this page http://quotescollectedovertheyears.blogspot.com/

Vitamin B1

I have been reading that some people who stutter have tried taking large doses of Vitamin B1 and that it has helped them stutter less.  I wonder if this really works, or if it is just a placebo effect.  Because of the following information, I sure hope people who try this are under a doctor's care to make sure that they don't become sick because they have upset the balance of other B vitamins in their system.

"The B vitamins all work together in a complex. Taking too much of a single B vitamin, such as vitamin B1, can cause an imbalance in the other B vitamins. In severe cases, the imbalance may cause deficiencies in the other B vitamins, which can cause a wide variety of symptoms. Deficiencies in several of the other B vitamins, such as B3, B6 and B12, can cause feelings of fatigue and tiredness, along with skin irritations and rashes. Deficiencies in B6 and B12 can lead to anemia, causing very pale skin and muscle weakness. Vitamin B12 deficiencies can also cause neurological symptoms, including numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.

Dosage: The Recommended Daily Allowance, or RDA, of vitamin B1 for adults over the age of 19 is 1.2 mg per day for males and 1.1 mg per day for females. The doses for children and infants are smaller, down to 0.2 mg per day for infants younger than 6 months old. People with vitamin B1 deficiency may be prescribed larger doses to treat their condition. Vitamin supplements often contain 50 to 100 mg of vitamin B1. Because vitamin B1 is generally nontoxic, these doses are almost always safe."

Tips for those who stutter

This was a great show about stuttering.  The interesting thing to me was hearing how to slide into words, talk like Winston Churchill and use pauses to break a sentence up and lessen stuttering.  These are just some things that a well-trained speech therapist can help those who stutter learn to do to make their speech smoother.  One of my uncles was so lucky to find out about the Stuttering Foundation when he was an adult.  Parents who have children who start stuttering should seek help so they can be referred to a speech therapist who can help the child so they hopefully don't have a lifelong problem.  Just like a health problem, the earlier you seek help, the better.

Presenting yourself

This is good information for becoming more confident in presenting yourself during an interview or anytime you are talking to a group.  Even if you stutter, these tips should help you come across better.  See this page http://stutteringiscool.com/links/power-poses/

Others help with bullying

It sure would be great if every football team followed suit.  In fact, it would be great if every athletic, popular, group of young people helped stop bullying and became advocates for those who are "different" no matter how.

Stuttering and getting a job

Everyone goes through a long application and interview process before finally landing the right job. Consider this your practice run until you are hired. Learn something from each practice. And, sometimes, staying in contact with those that you previously interviewed with is an avenue for another interview/job. Ask them why you were not chosen and what you can do to improve your chances of being the one for the position. Let them know you are really interested in the job as the person they hired (if they did hire someone else) may not stay. Offer companies that are not sure about your work performance to let you volunteer for a month if your financial state can handle that. Then, you can show them your work ethics, skills, and the company doesn't have to go through "all the hoops" of paperwork until they are sure they have the right person. Sell yourself and your skills.

Early help for stuttering

Getting help for young children, instead of waiting to see if the outgrow stuttering, will lessen the chance that they stutter as teens and adults.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-20080203

New Device to help with stuttering

This reminds me of watching a video where a speech therapist tells a teen to feel his throat while he is speaking.  I hope this device is available and affordable to all who need it.  This should be able to work whether in a crowded restaurant, on a noisy street, or while giving a presentation.  The auditory feedback devices are only useful for individual speaking situations with no other noises in the background.

Do not let stuttering ruin your life

"True, your stutter is a part of you but it should not run your life.  If you allow it to take control, you can never find the real person behind the defensive facade you continually hide behind."  Jon Symons

Rap and stuttering

I don't like "rap" and most modern music, but if "rapping" helps someone who stutters that is great!  http://www.dailynewstranscript.com/entertainment/x346973822/Overcoming-life-s-hurdles-13-year-old-rapper-Lil-JaXe  It is interesting that he states a teacher bullied him.  No teacher should be able to maintain their cerificate if they do anything but encourage a student.

Speech Easy

For those who have asked about the devices that are supposed to "cure" stuttering, this segment shows that they do sometimes create immediate fluency, but it is not lasting.  Thanks to StutterTalk for making this available!  http://stuttertalk.com/following-up-on-the-speecheasy-and-stuttering-with-mark-babcock-episode-192/

Bullying at school

Here is an interesting story about a girl who was bullied at school.  http://www.gpb.org/news/2011/11/15/bullied-student-seeks-refuge-at-home

Although every school should have a way to keep bullying at bay, it also happens off school grounds where they can do nothing or little about it.

This article shows that those who wish to get their education without the fear of bullying can do so.  This page http://www.k12.com/ has a place to enter your state to find out what resources are available where you live if you are in the USA.  I hope other countries have something similar.

One week of therapy!

"A week-long, intense course of speech therapy may help reduce stuttering, a new study shows. What's more, improvements in speech corresponded with actual brain changes documented on MRI scans."  Read the rest of the article at http://www.webmd.com/brain/news/20120808/week-long-speech-therapy-may-improve-stuttering

The Stuttering Foundation responds to this article with "It is our experience that a competent therapist can help a person who stutters become fluent in one week. That is not the challenge; the goal in stuttering therapy is staying fluent - taking what you learn in the therapy setting and transferring it into the real world and maintaining that level of fluency over time."  Read the rest here
http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/prnewswire/press_releases/Tennessee/2012/08/08/DC54596

The Foundation has referrals to speech therapists who are trained to work with stuttering.  They have lists of intensive clinics and summer workshops, too.

When things are going wrong

It helps to think about what is right and good in your life at times that everything seems to be going wrong.  Make a list of everything good and you’ll feel better.  Then, make a list of the things that need changing and think of solutions to them.
Many places take applications over the internet. They even have one in the store and point people to that when they come asking for a job. Things have changed over the years. We used to job hunt by replying to an ad in the paper, mailiing our resume, and getting a reply by mail or by going door to door and asking if they were hiring. If you are better in person than on the phone, stop in at some local shops and tell them you are looking for employment. Do not try to hide your stutter; tell them up front that you stutter but that you are a hard worker and have ____ skills. Take a written resume that lists your skills instead of past jobs since you haven't worked. You could try an employment agency if there is one in your town. You can also create your own job and be self employed for your first job. Think of what you enjoy doing and are skilled at and put an ad in the paper - type for people, do odd jobs for sick or elderly, drive people to doctor appointments (some people can't drive and would prefer to pay an individual rather than call a cab), etc. The Stuttering Foundation has a good brochure you can take to employers. Look at the brochure section at stutteringhelp.org

Stuttering groups worldwide

This page http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Default.aspx?tabid=187 has links to several groups with some in different languages. This page http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/isad10/papers/translation10/translation10.html has information translated into various languages. Stuttering affects people all over the world.

Therapy

If you resist having therapy and think it is useless, it will be. This goes for any kind of therapy whether for a speech problem or a physical problem. Those who have a qualified speech therapist and who learn the techniques and practice them will obtain better speech. Those who have had joint replacement and go to physical therapy and follow the instructions while at home will have mobility again. Those who don't will continue on as they were or be immobilized and bed ridden. It is a choice!
